Most people consider PVP to be the “end game” when it comes to World of Warcraft: WOTLK, however it's been my experience that the last and final mountain everyone has to overcome is where to get gold from. Gold in WOTLK, much like in the real world, makes things go round.
There are thousands of time tested strategies for getting gold in WOTLK; perhaps the most consistently used tactic is grinding or farming gold. While farming for gold probably isn't the ideal way most people build up their bank account, when you start to see your pocket growing at a ridiculous rate, ideals tend to fly out the windows.
There are a few keys to farming for gold in WOTLK and the most crucial components you need to keep an eye out can be found below:
1. Mobs that drop gold. Usually human type mobs drop the most gold, so when you start to look for a spot to farm start with checking towns and such, not pvp towns, but rather PVE towns as they tend to have high populations of humanoids.
2. Mobs that can be killed quickly. I will usually farm mobs that are 2-4 levels lower than I am. I do this because it's faster to kill more mobs quickly and you typically will not take as much damage, which results in less time spent having to heal while you're farming for gold.
3. Keep your eye out for mobs that drop a variety of items. There are certain items that when sold on a single item basis don't amount to much, but when sold in stacks of 20 can get you 2-5 gold. Thinks grey junk items for instance. There are also a few rare areas where items can drop from animals that will vendor for 1 gold a pop, as tempting as it may be to sell them for 1 gold it's actually much more lucrative to sell them in the auction house for 2-4 a piece.
4. This is probably the most important factor, look for mobs that respawn quickly. Mobs will respawn in a minute or to, others in three to four. Keep in mind that the faster the respawn rate, the faster you can come back and farm them again.
Keeping these four things in mind a great gold farming spot in northrend can be found in Dragon blight just south of Venomspire. It's a decent spot for people whose levels allow them to come here and can get you gold very quickly.
The best strategy for this area is to use a mount and run around the first courtyard area. Grab agro on 5-8 mobs and then AOE till you're blue in the face. Then loot for gold and items. After you're done looting you'll want to get back on your mount and head further south towards the beach area where you'll find a little hovel of tents. Next to those tents are 5-8 more mobs. Agro and AOE till they all fall down and then loot for gold and goodies. Hop back on your mount and pay a visit to the boat with the burning sails a little further south. This boat has around 12 mobs on it. Be prepared and fully healed then hop on the boat and once again AOE and loot for gold and items.
Once you've finished up farming on the boat head back up north and just retrace your steps. Usually all the mobs have respawned by the time you get back to them so you can simply continue grinding these three spots on this route till you're so tired of farming for gold you'll wonder why you ever started.
Once you do start to wonder why you're farming for gold be sure to check your bags for items and cash, this should help put your mind at ease. Go sell the myriad of grey and green items, disenchant if you can, and you can easily make upwards of 100-200 gold an hour.
Grinding for gold in WOTLK isn't a bad thing all the time especially when you can find a way to maximize the profit you make.
